Wanneer je hoort dat er over sterren en sterrenbeelden wordt gesproken, zet je jezelf al schrap voor onplezierig nieuws. Iemand moet gestorven zijn. En inderdaad, helaas hebben we niet altijd goed nieuws. Een van onze meest geliefde en gevolgde kleine vrienden heeft zijn plaats ingenomen in het Sterrenbeeld Luiaard. Onze kleine vriend Glenn, die zijn best deed in leven te blijven zodat hij zijn nieuwe thuis realiteit kon zien worden. Hoewel Glenn dol was op zijn eten en zijn luiaardsmoothie, slaagde hij er niet in om te gedijen en op de een of andere manier leek hij geen voedingsstoffen uit zijn eten te halen. Op een bepaald moment hebben we zelfs besloten om zijn spijsvertering te helpen door probiotica aan zijn dieet toe te voegen. Glenn ontving veel liefde van onze buitenlandse en lokale vrijwilligers. Gabriella, Esi, Greta en Kasie \u2013 allemaal afkomstig uit hun respectieve landen om ons te helpen met de zorg voor de dieren en ook met onze andere projecten \u2013 en onze lokale vrijwilligers Ann, Stellar, Yvonne, Lori, Jonathan, Kavita, Patrick hielpen hem allemaal op hun eigen manier en hielden veel van hem. Onze dierenartsen Audrey en Leontine hebben beiden hun deskundige hulp verleend. Patrick bouwde hem zijn speciale klimrek, de andere vrijwilligers gaven hem smoothie en fysiotherapie en iedereen gaf hem veel liefde. Hij was onze kleine ster. Hij was volhardend en wilde niet opgeven, maar zijn kleine lichaam faalde hem. We zullen nooit weten waarom. Misschien had hij zijn moeder zo vroeg verlaten dat hij essenti\u00eble bacteri\u00ebn in zijn spijsverteringskanaal miste om hem te helpen alle voedingsstoffen uit zijn voedsel te halen, misschien hadden de antibiotica voor zijn ge\u00efnfecteerde wond een negatief neveneffect, we zullen het nooit weten. Wat we wel weten, is dat we in de eerste plaats moeten voorkomen dat dieren worden aangeschoten, want dan had de kleine Glenn de beproevingen niet hoeven doorstaan zonder zijn moeder. Ons centrum zal een belangrijke educatieve functie hebben, en verhalen zoals het verhaal van Glenn zullen worden benadrukt om mensen te laten begrijpen waarom schietoefeningen op levende dieren verkeerd zijn. Als liefde Glenn had kunnen redden, zou hij voor altijd hebben geleefd.<\/p>\n

Het verhaal van Glenn<\/p>\n

Baby Glenn came in huddled in a small box. The young lady, who did not want her picture taken, told me that she had found the baby in an overgrown plot in her street. She thought the mother was dead, but did not know for sure. They had fed him bread, milk and bananas and had fed him a bottle. Her friend had tried to sell the animal through facebook, but received threats and kind and unkind nudges to give the animal to the Green Heritage Fund Suriname. They panicked and tried to get the animal over to our facility as soon as they could. It was Easter Monday, a national holiday, and we had gone out to release some animals. They were waiting at the gate as we pulled up. Before she hurriedly left, she said: \u201cOh, his name is Glenn\u201d. Glenn stole everybody\u02bcs heart with his good looks and eager attitude when we were feeding him. Although I had noticed something on his leg, I had not thoroughly examined him as our vet was also out of the country. But then one of our volunteers complained that he smelled. When we examined him, we found an infected shotwound in his hindleg. Now we were sure that his mother was dead. We cleaned out the wound immediately, and brought him the next day to another vet, who again cleaned and inspected the wound and confirmed it was a shotwound. He received medication and we continued to clean it out daily. Glenn received physiotherapy as his leg was weak and he was not so good at moving it. His growth was also stunted and our vet Audrey regularly came to check on his progress. For Glenn, the Rehab center cannot be built fast enough. However, the heavy rains of the rainy season delayed the construction activities.<\/p>\n

Vreemd genoeg was de week waarin Glenn stierf, een week van meer verdriet. Ik nam niet alleen Glenn mee naar en uit de kliniek van de dierenarts, maar we hadden nog een andere pati\u00ebnt, ook met wonden, die op 31 augustus was binnen gebracht. Ze leefde nauwelijks toen ik haar uit de dierentuin ophaalde. Ze moet ook doelwit zijn geweest voor een of andere stomme idioot. Het dier was gevonden in de buurt van de dierentuin en blijkbaar had ze het opgegeven. We haastten ons naar de dierenarts die het infuus gaf en onderzocht, naar wat ik dacht, dat een kogelwond was. De volgende dag werd het opnieuw onderzocht, \u00e9\u00e9n kogel zat in haar poot, de andere was in haar rug, een paar centimeter van de ruggengraat. We dachten dat ze het zou halen, omdat ze heel goed at, ondanks dat ze heel veel pijn had. Na een volle week beseften we echter dat ze verlamd was en zelfs niet naar het toilet kon gaan. Samen met onze dierenartsen Audrey en Leontine moest ik toen de moeilijke beslissing nemen om haar te laten gaan. Ze ging onze Kleine Heldere Ster Glenn achterna, die een paar dagen eerder was overleden, naar het Sterrenbeeld Luiaard.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
