Met Faye, een inheemse leider van de Wapishana-stam in Guyana.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Recent had ik het genoegen om met Faye te werken, een inheemse leider van de Wapishana-stam in de Zuid-Rupununi savanne in Guyana. Ze vertelde me over de vervuiling die wordt veroorzaakt door goudwinning in de hoofdwateren van vier dorpen in haar land. Faye vertelde me dat hoewel de dorpelingen weten dat de vervuiling veroorzaakt door de mijnbouw niet goed is voor de gemeenschappen, ze dit niet konden bewijzen. Door in het Shared Resources Joint Solutions-programma te werken en samen te werken met andere groepen en organisaties, kon haar gemeenschap niet alleen het bewustzijn vergroten over hoe de vervuiling hun welzijn, gezondheid en toekomst be\u00efnvloedde. Ze konden ook bewijzen hoe slecht deze vervuiling was, omdat wetenschappers met hen samen werkten. Ze was zelfs in staat om de media te bereiken vanwege haar nieuwe netwerk dat nu tot in de hoofdstad van haar land reikte. Dit is natuurlijk een prachtig verhaal, over hoe samenwerking, kennis en bewustzijn vorm kunnen geven aan beleid en praktijken.<\/p>\n

Wat echter de meeste indruk op me maakte, was toen ik haar vroeg of er traditionele verhalen over goud waren. Ze vertelde me toen dat er inderdaad verhalen zijn over de Geest van Goud. Deze Spirit of Gold is bekend bij haar mensen als de beschermer van het land. En als je het goud \nverwijderd hebt, dan heb je de Geest verwijderd die het land beschermt. Dit is de reden waarom inheemse stammen zich normaal niet bezighouden met goudwinning, omdat door het verwijderen van het goud hun land niet langer zou worden beschermd.<\/p>\n
