Visit the Sloth Rehabilitation Center
Visits to our center are only possible after an appointment has been made and confirmed. Appointments should be made preferably a week in advance.
In July 2017 we moved from the city, where we never allowed visitors to come, to our wellness center in our new location. This is an hour’s drive from Paramaribo. On Friday, the 2nd of November 2018, we officially opened our doors for visitors.
If we have a release, there is a possibility to join that if you have your own transportation. Releases are planned in such a way that you will be able to participate in the release. Scientists from the “Sloth Sanctuary in Costa Rica” found that sloths experience tachycardia* when they are handled by strangers; this can lead to their premature death. Sloths are also sensitive to diseases when they are exposed to outside microbes and allergens. That is why we only offer a possibility to join a release, during which further close contact with the animals will not be allowed.
Join a dolphin trip
Guests can join the research trips (maximum of 10 people per trip). This way guests can experience the research first hand and help with funding these trips, thus helping to ensure the continuity. The volunteers provide information about the research, the dolphins and the estuary.
The boat departs from Leonsberg and heads towards Braamspunt. Along the way research is conducted every time dolphins are spotted. After arrival at Braamspunt guests are invited to go for a walk on the beach. The boat heads back to Leonsberg after approximately one hour.
